🌿 About The Doune
Set within 36 acres of peaceful Highland countryside, The Doune is a beautifully restored 1856 Scottish country house offering a luxurious escape on the doorstep of Inverness. From the moment you arrive along the stone‑wall‑lined drive, the house reveals itself with a quiet, timeless elegance - a place designed for slowing down, breathing deeply, and feeling instantly at ease, a luxury Highland retreat near Inverness.
Inside, heritage and comfort blend seamlessly. Every room has been thoughtfully curated with meticulous attention to detail, creating an atmosphere of warmth, indulgence, and understated luxury. The Doune is a home that invites you to settle in, unwind, and savour the stillness of the Highlands.
Beyond the house, the landscape opens in every direction. At the edge of our land, a woodland path begins - a soft, secluded‑feeling trail that leads from open countryside into the gentle hush of the forest. Elsewhere on the estate, the River Nairn winds through its own stretch of landscape, offering a peaceful place for wandering, reflecting, or casting a line in the quiet of the glen. You can discover more of the estate’s outdoor spaces on our Gardens page.
Days here unfold naturally: exploring the grounds, watching wildlife drift through the fields, and letting the rhythm of the land guide your pace. Evenings bring a different kind of calm - sinking into your private hot tub surrounded by peaceful Highland scenery, the last light catching the stone walls as the day fades. Today, The Doune is more than a country house. It’s a sanctuary for peaceful retreats, romantic escapes, intimate weddings, and anyone seeking a place where luxury and nature meet in perfect harmony.
This is The Doune - a Highland haven shaped by history, held by nature, and ready to welcome you in.
Our Story
Originally built as the dowager house for MacKintosh of MacKintosh in 1856, The Doune Luxury Country House has a rich history. Although the house was in a complete state of disrepair in 2009, it has been lovingly re-built to 21st-century standards. We stripped it back to the stone walls, removed all the floors, and rebuilt it with underfloor heating on all three floors and incorporating seven different Victorian tiling patterns. Today, we care for The Doune with the same devotion that rebuilt it - ensuring every guest feels the magic of this place. You can read the full story of the house’s past on our History page.
